Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa
Opening a new chapter in its history, the clifftop Mullion Cove Hotel on Cornwall’s Lizard peninsula challenged Hart Miller Design with extending its offering into the spa and wellness sector.
Having worked with the hotel since 2012 on a rolling expansion project, we were commissioned to create a distinctive spa experience unique to the South West. Our design takes guests on an immersive journey of relaxation, wrapped up in the rich materiality of the building and sea views beyond.
At the heart of the project is a contrast of scale – placing intimate human sensory experiences within a jaw-dropping natural location of rock, sea and elemental power.
We worked closely with the Spa team to understand the guest journey that they wanted to create. The focus, naturally, is on relaxation and our task was to create spaces that would encourage an unwinding mindset from the outset.
The guest experience starts within an intimate lounge setting before passing along the Sando – the Japanese-style approach to a temple – to begin the spa journey.
A carefully chosen palette of timbers and natural tones complement the hues and contours of the Cornish landscape whilst floor to ceiling windows frame the spectacular view. Immersive and cocoon-like treatment rooms sit further back within the building.
Lighting plays a critical role setting the mood for each space – it is designed to allow therapists to change the ambience for a treatment or weather conditions throughout the year.
Having opened in September 2019, the hotel has already had cause to celebrate, securing rave reviews and the accolade of The Sunday Times’ 100 Top British Hotels.
